The series is set well before the rise of the First Order, which is the main antagonist in "The Force Awakens".
A Bridge Period:
The era depicted in "The Mandalorian" explores the transition between the Empire's fall and the New Republic's tenuous control over the galaxy, as well as the beginnings of the First Order's formation.
Be advised, that there is some intermingling with a few other of their newish series like crossovers. For example, Season 3 begins with something unexpected due to something happening in season 2 at the end. There is an explanation that you will do in The Book of Boba Fett, or you can just google your question, which I'll leave to you to discover what it will be when you begin season 3 of The Mandalorian so that I don't ruin anything.
Ideally, they'd take each episode of each of the series and blend them in order of time and space and just label them that way so no googling at all. Still, there are only a few things that will jump out to demand an explanation, so anything vexing, just google it. You'll see how it fits. If you watch all of the spin offs, it will all fall right into place.
I suspect you'll like them all. My kids are HUGE Star Wars fans while I am just a fan. IOW, I would NEVER fly to Japan for a convention, but one of them did. **chuckle**
