I rather doubt that our high technological society is going to be able to handle the recovery any better than our ancestors did. Our interconnected infrastructure is far too fragile to survive in functioning form. Consider water supply, sewer system, electric grids, natural gas supply, oil and gasoline supply systems, transportation, information and media systems, trying to supply necessities, and basic medical care to a few million people for months on end. The average city has only a three-day supply of food. Then the cost rebuilding with massive unemployment.
