Southern populist with impeccable segregationist credentials,
extremist on war and law n' order, and so forth. A real whiff of the Southern White Baptist preacher and con-man about him, which probably restricted his popularity in the North.


I gather that late in life, he did abandon some of his segregationalism and make peace with black folks. I think he earned a little respect back from that.
