The Colorado Rockies are active. Hot springs emerge from the flanks of the many ranges, some with towns named for them. Glenwood Springs, Manitou Springs, Steamboat Springs, Hot Sulphur Springs, Pagosa Springs.... Medano Creek, flowing along the south flank of the Great Sand Dunes, tallest in the world, is one of the world's weirdest creeks. We get earthquakes up to about 5 on the Richter scale.

The San Luis is a rift valley, and every year the San Juan Range and Sangre de Cristo range grow a centimeter further apart. The warm artesian water that floods the eastern side of the San Luis Valley allows alligators to survive outdoors year around, even when air temperature can drop to -40F.
