A Norwegian man has gone viral for his response to calls for Nordic people to immigrate to the United States.
Vocalist Chris Lund, 43, is from Norway, and recently heard President Donald Trump‘s pleas for more Scandinavian immigrants to move to the States.
On December 9, Trump spoke at a rally in Mount Pocono, Pennsylvania, where he complained about immigration and asked why more people from Nordic countries weren’t coming to the United States.
In his speech, Trump said he had asked a meeting of Democrat lawmakers “why it is we only take people from s***hole countries,” and “why can’t we have some people from Norway, Sweden, just a few? Let’s have a few from Denmark.”
He went on: “Do you mind sending us a few people? Send us some nice people. Do you mind? But we always take people from Somalia, places that are a disaster, right? Filthy, dirty, disgusting, ridden with crime.”
Lund took notice—and decided to give his opinion on why people in his country weren’t flocking to the United States.
Lund told Newsweek he did this because of the “recurring irony of being told America is the ‘land of opportunity’ by someone who doesn’t seem to realize that, for a Norwegian, moving there is a massive downgrade.”
“I saw the comments Trump made about wanting more Norwegians and I just did the math,” Lund said. “When you compare five weeks of vacation and a year of maternity leave to the American system, the offer is a joke. I’m not trying to be mean. I’m just looking at the benefits package.”
On December 12, Lund took to his Threads account @chrislundartist where he wrote in a now-viral post: “Trump said he wants more immigrants from Norway. I have reviewed the offer, and I have to decline.
“The benefits package is terrible. You offer two weeks of vacation if we are lucky; we get five. Your maternity leave is ‘good luck,’ while we get a year. Your healthcare plan is GoFundMe, while ours is free. And your safety plan is just ‘thoughts and prayers.’
“Moving to the US right now feels like leaving a spa to go work in a burning hot dog stand. Thanks, but we will stay in the snow.”
In Norway, all employees are entitled to at least 25 working days of holiday each year, and employers are duty-bound to ensure each employee uses all of their holiday allowance, according to the Norwegian Labour Inspection Authority.
Parents are entitled to a total of 12 months’ leave after the birth of a baby, or this time can be extended by up to three years if the parent returns to work part-time. Norway also has universal health coverage, funded by automatic taxes and payroll contributions by employees and employers, according to the Commonwealth Fund.
In response to a request for comment, White House spokesperson Abigail Jackson told Newsweek: “President Trump is right. America is the greatest country in the world. Aliens who come to our country, complain about how much they hate America, fail to contribute to our economy, and refuse to assimilate into our society should not be here.”
Lund told Newsweek he has previously visited the States, where he has met “some truly amazing, welcoming people,” and “in the past, the idea of moving was actually on the table.”
Now, however, he says from where he’s standing, “the U.S. looks less like a dream destination and more like a cautionary tale. I’ve realized I much prefer free healthcare and a life that doesn’t revolve entirely around surviving the latest political crisis.”

His post had a massive reaction, racking up more than 83,000 likes, with several commenters calling it “spot on,” and another admitting: “Meanwhile my whole family just talked about how we all wish we could move to Norway!”
Lund told Newsweek, however, that when it comes to his post, “half the people are agreeing with me, and the other half are calling me a moron and telling me to stay out of America’s business, or asking why I’m ‘obsessed’ with the United States.
“I’m not obsessed, though. I’m just observant,” Lund said. “The truth is, what happens in America affects everyone. A lot of Americans don’t seem to understand the impact their country has on the rest of the world. Your economy and your politics vibrate across the globe, so we have to pay attention.”
And as a final point on Trump’s comments, he added that it was “funny” that the president wants more people from Norway to move to the U.S., and he “should probably be careful what he wishes for.”
“If we actually moved to the U.S. and started voting, we most certainly wouldn’t be voting for him. We’d be voting for the very things he calls ‘socialism,'” Lund said.
