Funny, when I skip using POUTY because of line 1 results giving me 2+ vowels, half of the time I regret it because I needed at least one of the letters in it.

In truth, I probably woulda done basically what you did - Jump right into guessing the answers or maybe using a 4 consonant word flanger like Moishe's PSYCH or maybe DITCH. It's impossible know after we already know the answer.
