The Peak yesterday morning on the way to League.

On the way home I drove through the old downtown to document the devastation of the severe winter drought, the unusually warm March heat that lured many deciduous trees out of dormancy, followed by two catastrophic freezes to 19f that killed the emerging leaf growth.

Close examination of these trees showed no sign of axillary bud activity to replace the killed foliage. Most affected were white ash and green ash, normally so resilient they're common and almost native. Also affected were red oaks, white oaks, American elms and red maples, and crab apples.

All across the city these trees appear dead. There doesn't appear to be adequate ground moisture to fuel the regeneration necessary for axillary growth to replace what was killed. Time will tell, but it appears bleak.

All these trees across the city, dead, may hopefully stir enough brains in the stupid MAGA to realize something extraordinary happened and it just might be linked to climate change!

White ash and green ash make up a big majority of deciduous trees across the city, and to not see this requires stupidity, ignorance, and blindness. If people irrigated by deep watering these once a month through the winter, this damage could have been mitigated or prevented altogether.

This will surely get noticed as summer progresses and these trees remain leafless, lifeless and barren. It isn't just one or two here and there. Entire neighborhoods lost most of their deciduous tree forest.
