Who better to lead the response to the recent hantavirus outbreak than a urologist with a history of promoting debunked right-wing conspiracies?

Health and Human Services’ Assistant Secretary for Health Brian Christine led a hantavirus press conference Monday—despite the fact that he has more experience discussing penile implants than he does viral outbreaks.

Before joining the Trump administration, Christine worked as a urologist in Alabama. But since he donated more than $8,500 to Donald Trump’s 2024 presidential campaign, he soon found himself in a leadership position.

As a urologist, Christine had a YouTube channel called “Erection Connection,” where he discussed topics ranging from “repairing a penile fracture” to “length and girth expansion with penile implant cylinders.”

He was also a conservative activist who promoted COVID-19 conspiracy theories, including falsely describing the virus as a government plot to control people and comparing the Biden administration’s pandemic response to Nazi Germany. Christine even claimed that the COVID-19 vaccine is ineffective, which is simply not true.

Similarly, Christine is on the record opposing transgender rights, and he worked at a Catholic hospital that banned gender-affirming surgeries. Oddly, a 2017 ad for Christine’s practice advertised the availability of gender-affirming surgery.[itself a form of quackery]

Trump has selected medical quacks and conspiracy theorists to lead key public health agencies, including notorious anti-vaxxer Robert F. Kennedy Jr. as HHS secretary and Nicole Saphier—who regularly misinformed the public about health issues on Fox News—as surgeon general.

Trump’s adherence to quackery continues the deadly trend that became the biggest issue of his first term, when he constantly downplayed the severity of COVID-19, opposed masking and vaccination, and even suggested injecting disinfectant to combat the virus.

And while hantavirus has so far not amounted to a pandemic, Trump’s decision to lead the response with a conspiratorial penis doctor doesn’t exactly inspire confidence this time around.
