My uncle was on a ship; it hit a mine and he was one of the few survivors. He was reassigned and sent over a few days later, to take his place in the 12th Army.

He told of being dug in and having a German fighter plane swoop down and kill most of a British unit camped out in the valley below them. One of the very few stories, my Dad said, that he'd EVER told of the war. I always wondered if he saw any death camps in Germany.

I have a fine German officer's dress bayonet as one memento of his time in the war.
