..one reason this was so:

1776 – 'United States Declares Independence
The United States declared independence from Great Britain. Native nations were not included in the new government, despite occupying and governing much of the land claimed by the United States.'

..was that the Iroquois sided with their previous allies, the British, against the Revolutionaries - and lost. That turned out to be a big mistake.
