St. Mary's Glacier is gone




My last visit to the glacier was in 2015. I took Santiago up to see it and walk (with crampons and ice axe) on it. Not so easy to walk on a glacier with crampons and ice axe. You have to remember this is ice, not snow.

When I taught the gifted program, I used to take them on special trips during the summer. One trip was to St. Mary's Glacier where we set up dowls on tripods, one screwed into the glacer and the other anchored on the rock beside, to measure any movement. During that day the glacier moved three inches, proving it was a living, moving glacier.

The "experts" Fox found are saying it was a permanent snowfield. That is a *&^%$ lie.

I used to ski on it every summer when the surface was heavy snowpack. Once that melted down to the ice, the glacier was no longer skiable.
