Getting rid of Citizen's United and a basic tax-payer funding of all national candidates who meet a minimum 15% support in their respective primaries. Plus allowing only reasonably limited funds from any one donor (say $500K) to go directly or indirectly (via superPacs) to any candidate would take the obscene $$ out of elections and bring it back down to earth. Even limiting how much of any candidate's own money could be spent in a campaign would help.
Force the DNC, RNC, and all minor parties to fully reveal EVERY single donation for IRS purposes to prevent the ultra wealthy from buying party platforms.
If taxpayer funding was used not only for basic funding of 15%+ successfully supported campaigns, but more so to level the playing fields in each individual election seat so that no candidate could swamp another with expensive ads paid for with private funds. That alone would reduce the volume of private money injected into any race to overwhelm the opposition.
An added bonus for tax-payer funding would be having more high quality candidates able to compete and fewer "intended spoilers" to inject themselves into a race if they can't meet the minimum % to remain in any race.
If congress could also pass laws that force states to provide equal funds to all qualifying campaigns after the primaries, a lot of the insanity would end.
In addition, hold candidates accountable for any false claims against another opponent made by ANYONE supporting their campaigns legally liable for slander a/o libel if they don't immediately disowned the claims as false.
Make bald-faced lies told by any POTUS or elected official against candidates be a federal crime where they can be prosecuted, jailed, fined, a/o removed from office for election interference as well as any other applicable crime (slander, libel, conspiracy, etc).
Fix the pardons process to include judicial reviews if challenged with a reasonable argument against it, as well as having bipartisan committee reviews after any pardon is issued once the White House legal department signs off and the POTUS signs it.
End blanket pardons and pardons given to underlings for knowingly violating laws anyone with authority orders or coerces them to do. No more "I was asked or told to do it" when the underlying should reasonably know it was illegal.
I know we'll probably never get some of this wish list, but we can try to win them one at a time. Look at the big picture. Every victory will bring us closer to more integrity and honesty in our election process. That is how progress is made. One step at a time until the most natural thing is to pass it into law.
Just like civil rights, women's right to vote, gay marriage, etc. Work on the social aspect of any issue as well as nominal increments forward until it is accepted law.
In a world where you can be anything, choose to be kind.![]()
