Sia: Who can he blame now? Powell? Not likely to stick since so many businesses are loudly blaming the tariffs.
The jobs crash
Robert Reich- Sep 5
Friends,
Sorry again to intrude on you today, but I this morning’s jobs report shows that Trump’s economy is experiencing a jobs crash.
When I say jobs crash I mean that employers have essentially stopped hiring. Today’s report from the B.L.S. shows that the economy added only 22,000 jobs in August (relative to the normal monthly gain of 180,000 to 200,000).
The revised figures for June, based on added data, show that 13,000 jobs were lost that month. That’s the first net loss in monthly jobs since the start of the pandemic.
Trump blames Jerome Powell and the Fed for not cutting interest rates sooner but that’s not the reason employers have stopped hiring. They’ve stopped because the risk is too great.
Trump’s arbitrary, capricious, and mercurial decisions about tariffs and everything else that affects the economy have made it impossible for employers to make even modest predictions about the future. So they won’t hire.
Meanwhile, the Fed can’t cut interest rates much without risking more inflation.
Trump promised to reduce prices, but prices continue to rise. Blame Trump’s tariffs. Prices for wholesalers rose at the fastest pace in three years in July, and those wholesale prices are now being passed on to retailers and consumers.
Food prices are rising especially quickly. The prices of vegetables skyrocketed 40 percent in July. A recent Consumer Price Index report found electricity prices rising at double the rate of inflation, increasing 5.5 percent over the past year.
A jobs crash coupled with soaring prices is bad for everyone — including Republicans seeking to be reelected to Congress next year.
Important problem in this piece. Good and bad news with the jobs report

Good because it will hurt djt's popularity pretty quickly and bad because, well, anything that harms America is bad news. Losing so many jobs is VERY bad for America.
Ending tariffs (so far as possible) and reducing inflation. More and better-paying jobs. Increasing the minimum wage. Higher taxes on the rich. Affordable housing. And affordable, universal healthcare.
Stop messing around appeasing identity groups and defending illegals! -greenman
Provide access for all children to a solid, decent public education. We are still, very much (yea I know, not the greatest grammar - but believe me I am edumacated like ya know?. . .) a society of the haves and the have-nots. Our children are truly the hope for a better future. We bring them into the world - they didn't ask to be here. They deserve our support.
Teach critical thinking, understanding of logic, reading with comprehension, how the government is suppose to work, what the Constitution and Bill of Rights are about.
Restore separation of church and state!
Don't be afraid to admit when we are wrong. We will be a better nation for it.
Reel in the ultra greedy money grabbers of big pharma and the healthcare industry in general - allow medicare to negotiate for better drug prices on ALL drugs. Stop running in fear of universal health care. Our current system is in shambles.
End lobbying.
Stop mega campaign contributions, 'special favours' and behind closed doors 'deals' - it amounts to nothing more than bribery.
Term limits, Term Limits, TERM LIMITS, TERM LIMITS!!! I can't yell it loud enough.
Stop Congress from getting automatic raises every year. The rest of us should be so lucky.
Get rid of parties - they encourage partisan politics. Parties have become a means and an end in and of themselves.
Push for true transparency in government. Government should not be able to muck around with delays, delays, delays, endless arguments and tying things up with political rhetoric and endless court battles when the people have a right to know. They should have dead lines when they have no choice but to fork over the evidence, the documents, the results of investigations, the nitty-gritty and the whole enchilada. The longer something remains hidden, the greater the opportunity time provides to tamper with evidence and documents. (Can you say redact much? Dispose of? Rewrite and revise? Make crap up? Outright lie? Develop selective amnesia? Plot and plan with your buddies what you're going to say?) Ya can't have the fox watching the hen house either. We need watchdog groups populated by competent fair people - not loud mouth extremists.
If Capitol Hill get its, we get it (raises, perks, permanent jobs, benefits - you name it). If we don't get it, neither do they. Watch how things will change. . . and fast.
Better training in the field and vetting for police - better education for them in the law and their limits in executing their jobs/responsibilities. There are those who want to do a good job but are just not emotionally and psychologically equipped to do so. Don't tolerate police corruption - it does exist! Don't broad brush the police who care (they do exist) with those who are corrupt. Don't let frustration and emotionalism rule. We need cool heads.
Restore some of the authority the courts use to have. We have a revolving door system in some instances, in others we have too heavy handed decisions. We also have two justice systems - one for the privileged and one for the rest of us. Put an end to that!
Stop rewriting history! You can't learn from past mistakes by studying fairy tales.
Stop this nonsense of no one can be offended. In a diverse society it sometimes happens quite unintentionally. Grow up and practice a little understanding and tolerance if you want it in return. Sometimes people say stupid things without thinking - its not necessarily proof of bigotry and discrimination.
Restore the proper balance of power among the three branches of government. Restore respect for the Constitution and the Bill of Rights.
We the People have the right to vote representatives in office - do have the right to vote them out (and not just at the end of their term. . . which may be never), in essence firing them?
I can go on forever!!
OK . . . now I feel better.
Be the change. . .
Very well said!
