Eventful day... Posted by Skye on September 10, 2025, 8:10 pm Went to the protest at the MO state capital. Fairly peaceful event, mostly to protest the gerrymandering proposed to gain more of a Republican majority in the next election. Had a lot of likes on my "Definition of Insanity: Sucking Up to a Murderous Dictator While Alienating Your Friends, Allies, & Trading Partners..." sign. Then on the way home, our daughter texted that there had been a shooting at our grandkids' high school. Our grandson was in the cafeteria when it happened, and he ran all the way to a library down the hill from the school. His mom picked him up before the police blocked off the roads. Our granddaughter was in a classroom and was kept in lockdown for a long time before they were transferred to a different location where the parents could pick them up. Never would have thought this would happen in 'their' school. They had moved to Evergreen thinking it would be a safer place. Not. We live in a sick country. No place is safe. Our daughter has had training for this type of incident. She said no amount of training prepares a person for such a thing when it happens to your family. Then we hear the news about the political assassination. Didn't hear much about thoughts or prayers, though. Way up high on the capital building, there were two flags on the wall where they could not be easily reached or defaced. One was a "Trump" flag, and the other said "We took America back." Back to the dark ages.... As we stood in front of the capitol building with our signs, I noticed some who looked like they worked there passing by and looking at my sign. I could see from the expression on their faces that it gave them pause to think, in agreement.

Good news is it didn't affect your family directly. Bad news is it affected somebody's family directly. We had this 2nd Amendment discussion in America for years, with little to no meaningful progress toward solution. Like with the Bible, the argument isn't over the 2nd Amendment, but a small part of it, and even that is interpreted in order to have a point to argue. The common thread, from Columbine to your grandkid's school, to the Utah campus where Kirk was murdered is possession of a gun by someone who should never have access to one. America isn't just a sick country. It's a scary one. Today, when national mood should be somber, the stock market is soaring to new heights. In the face of economic reality striking every American with higher costs of everything, the markets soar. Why? Who invests? Who has extra money to invest? Answer to that question is the same behind the largely indifferent attitude in argument about that 2nd Amendment problem. Those banners have no place hanging on your capitol. Between that and gun violence, the problem is motivation and action to do that. It is a recycle of the human friction of nationalism that led directly to WWI and then WWII. Nationalism is alive and well. Putin is attempting to rebuild the USSR in name of it. Our felon vowed to MAGA, repeating the mistake. You were right to protest. Don't let what happend stop you. If We the People are to have a voice, We the People must speak now. Not just at election time when this pestilence feeds on our likelihood to make a bad and wrong choice. Now is the time. You can look away from a painting, but you can't listen away from a symphony

Posted by Skye on September 11, 2025, 9:47 pm, in reply to "Still speechless" Valued Poster I noticed while there at the capitol... there were several birds that looked like buzzards flying around and perched on the cupola or dome. I couldn't help but think aloud that "they are circling around our dying democracy." It's hard not to get discouraged sometimes, but I do NOT want to give up. As long as we are still alive, we have to use our voice when we see wrongs happening... else we begin to die already if we remain silent.

Circling buzzards mean some animal below is near death. If we apply that to our democracy, it means something to us. MAGA is unaware of the peril, for they are cause of it. They elected the felon. If we apply religious prophecy, strong argument can be made he is the antichrist. Millions of weak and false believers fell for his lies. Kirk's murder is no get out of jail card for the felon and his desire to dodge responsibility of the Epstein files. If anything, Kirk's personal life as described and published was the polar opposite of the felon. In that way, Kirk would be OUR martyr. His public life illustrated by his many extreme views pf different people is a shocking contradiction to descriptions of his personal life. Will MAGA see the hypocrisy between the felon and Kirk, as well as the parallels? You can look away from a painting, but you can't listen away from a symphony

In Colorado this would be doubly traumatic, as Columbine was one of the first and worst. I have to admire a kid who flees to a library for safety.. RESIST!

Hopefully whatever training/education one gets will increase one's odds of survival/not being injured but that emotional/psychological kick in the gut one gets doesn't go away all that easy, if at all. It's traumatizing, and it sometimes sticks with a person for life. Guns have always been available, but when I was a child I never feared going to school wondering if today would be the day when some twisted person decided to open fire. It's still unthinkable to me that anyone would even think to do such a thing, but here we are. Something has changed - our society today harbors a sickness that was either not present yesteryear, or at least was better controlled. People weren't so brazen - they didn't brag and boast about what they could get away with. People today make videos and post them on social media. I mean WTF?? Something is really fundamentally wrong. We need to get to the cause - I understand why people want guns to be eliminated, but the reality is the sickness will go merrily on if its not addressed. And if one is determined, one doesn't need a gun to kill. Heck, you can make a bomb out of items that are easily bought in stores. We need to get at the root cause and address it. It's a horror. I'm sorry your family had this terrible experience! Be the change. . .

We had a guy here yesterday to sell us custom motorized blinds for some of our windows. Out of the blue he started talking about the ‘differences’ between men and women. Odd. Just struck me as an insecure man who ‘needed’ to focus on differences in order to feel more like a man or ‘better than’ somehow.

Mental illness is a real problem in this country, and not just among the poor or disadvantaged. The culture here has tended to espouse rugged individualism and self sufficiency. Teachers are not even allowed to talk about certain subjects or current events in schools. Hard to solve problems that way.

Why was it held outdoors with no security? Why not indoors with hard core security and a carefully selected audience for anyone political or controversial? It is a good question considering Posted by dancing digits on September 11, 2025, 12:26 am, in reply to "as for the political assination" Valued Poster how angry some people are nowadays and the inexcusable methods some have chosen to express that anger. I see it as a symptom of a bigger problem. We need to root out what is going wrong with our society. In the meantime, we should come together despite our differences and condemn this kind of violence in the strongest terms possible. Be the change. . .
