Blackhawk helicopters dropping agents into Chicago. People being arrested because they are there. Separating kids and parents. Separating black people from brown. People detained for hours for no reason. Destruction of doors walls fences with big chain saws. Guns pointed at faces.

My new work To Be Free uses the theme from Schindler's List; officially I am waiting for John Williams to give me permission, and I am certain he will approve. We're friends, both students of Tedesco. At the conclusion of our "praise and teaching piece" the flute plays a solo arpeggio to a very high A, holds and diminuendos. The singing and instruments ceased, and it is an exposed and dangerous moment for the flutist; and that's the point. The work and effort to be free is dangerous, and exposed.
The reason the movie was made in black and white, except for the little girl's red coat, was because much of the background scenery is actual Nazi film archive material, recorded by their cimenatographers to preserve what they thought would be a historic model changing the world. Of course it did, but not in the glorious Aryan way they imagined. The modern actors worked before a green screen of that real Nazi material.
Significance of the little girl's red coat was when Schindler saw her, he realized the Nazi intent was to exterminate everyone present and leave NO witnesses. That set his plan into motion.
In America today grows a movement who once again glorifies the anti DEI efforts the Nazis practiced. This is embraced by misguided American Christian Nationalism, and taken advantage of by the felon to concentrate and consolidate his power for his own purposes, and a handful of oligarchy behind Project 2025. It is sadly, going to plan. Just as they attempt to rewrite US history to suit their narrative and agenda, they likewise rewrite the Holocaust in satisfaction of Neonazis everywhere.
The changes happen so swiftly, it's hard to keep up. In church I am surrounded by MAGA American Christian Nationalists, and I am using the power of music and Biblical text to remind them that DEI is a real Christian concept, and those who speak against it, speak against us, and Christ. It is working. They are thinking. Our congregation is growing. We've tripled in attendence since implementing this apolitical, nonpolitical return to the real Christian mission.
Many years ago Holly was a singer in my choir and music student. Her grandparents gave me this pot as a thank you. It is an enamelworks pot from the Schindler factory, and her grandparents were characters in the story. This was BEFORE the movie was made.
I used the pot over the years when teaching about the nationalism (in music) that led to WWII. It is a piece of history people... students can TOUCH. It is real. The movie made the unit especially compelling.
The history we live and make today is another clash of these stark differences. We must be certain we're on the correct side of it. The felon and P2025 is not.
I am not proselytizing. What works for me may not for you, and what works for you may not for me. That is diversity, equity and inclusion, and we are all stronger for it. I am attempting to get my faith, especially those cultivated by MAGA, to put down their trouble, reach across the aisle, the street, the state line, across time and distance shrunk by technology, to include diversity and equity, the fire of our people a few cold footed dead men are attempting to stomp out.

That is their fool proof plan. They are going all in... no turning back. They have too much to lose now, and they know it.
It's time for the country to wake up and realize that WE have too much to lose. We must speak up NOW and back the Democrats on the government shutdown, and hold firm, as Reich outlined. Let it be known WHO we the people are blaming for that shutdown, as we all know the current administration has already been working since day one of this term to effectively shut the government down, remove any opposition, including free speech, and declare martial law.
We have no choice but to resist, and loudly... if we value our lives, our livelihood, our freedom and our country.
We are in big trouble unless the Generals decide this is not gonna fly. Then what? A military coup. Or court-martials.Feel free to disagree. Everyone has the right to be wrong - Even me.
