I remember reading a slightly different take about Lucifer's fall from grace than what may be traditionally taught. But there is no definite story in the bible about Lucifer/Satan. There are many other texts that are not canonized but studied by many.
I don't recall the exact text but the gist is that Lucifer was created with only the capacity to serve God but when god created man in his image Satan could not revere the creation because he was created to only worship God and refused to let man be more revered than him.
The Temptation of Adam and Eve is an archetype for stories like Job and Jesus in the desert.
Basically Satan trying to prove that God's creation was not worthy of God's love not necessarily him trying to collect souls.
