This means the federal debt rose by $1 trillion in a little over two months, which the Peter G. Peterson Foundation calculates is the fastest rate of growth outside the pandemic. Michael A. Peterson, CEO of the nonpartisan watchdog dedicated to fiscal sustainability, said this landmark is “the latest troubling sign that lawmakers are not meeting their basic fiscal duties.” In a statement provided to Fortune, Peterson said that “if it seems like we are adding debt faster than ever, that’s because we are. We passed $37 trillion just two months ago, and the pace we’re on is twice as fast as the rate of growth since 2000.” The foundation’s analysis attributes the acceleration to a combination of deficit spending, rising interest costs, and the economic drag of the ongoing government shutdown. Peterson emphasized that the costs of carrying this debt are mounting rapidly. Interest payments on the national debt now total roughly $1 trillion per year, the fastest-growing category in the federal budget. Over the last decade, the government spent $4 trillion on interest, and Peterson calculated that it will balloon to $14 trillion over the next 10 years. ADMIN It grew from $1.2 tillion to $3.5 trillion in the same period. That is money the government doesn't have to pay its debt. Tax cuts of the BBB will swell that to $8 trillion in a year. Government gets sufficient revenue to pay most of the debt. We haven't had that since 2000. When there is a shortfall, it leaves a deficit. Somebody who was suppoed to be paid for services or products doesn't get paid in time. They have to wait for the next annual pay cycle. Republican cutting taxes is exactly the WRONG thing to do. That makes the deficit larger. That means more poople who are supposed to be paid on time won't be. Interest accrues on the deficit as an incentive to pay on time. Most of the time it is tacked onto the deficit, making that grow ever larger. Democrats traditionally pay down the deficit with more spending, which the GOP says is wrong. Republicans increasw the deficit by cutting taxes, but spending just as much and sometimes more. They bank on most Americans not paying close enough to their own finances to notice or be concerned. " ADMIN There's nothing wrong with using credit... wisely. Borrowing to the time of 37 TRILLION $$ is anything but wise use of credit.

They mindlessly repeat the mantra that 'we're giving people their own money back,' never mind that it's always the rich who do best. Or that there are real costs to government. Or that there are protected divisions of government like the Pentagon, which is NEVER cut. RESIST!

Its their money republicans give away in tax cuts. The late pays don't complain because they tack on a hefty amunt of interest on the unpaid debt. Ever wonder why tax fines are so much? Making it impossible for whistleblowers to file reports and targeting them when they try keeps the public from knowing all of the terrible and illegal things they do.
