All women need is a copy of their marriage registered as happening. I got my real ID after getting a copy of it from the town hall in another state where I got married. No big deal. The problem arises when someone can't afford the small fee to get a copy.

It's actually easier in most cases to get a passport than a REAL ID. If you have a passport already that can expedite things. Most people don't have one. Some don't have Driver's Licenses. Multiple Marriages can create more hassle. Each state deals with it in different ways. Were you born here? Do you look 'American'? Karen at the License Bureau might question the validity of your documentation because of her 'thoroughness'. I know several women with non-pale skin that have run into many issues. It's highly probable their will be many disenfranchised women in the near future. I'm glad you are not one of them. Recognized Federally only. It will not transfer state to state as an ID. It basically getting a card that complies with anti-counterfeiting tech recognized federally. Obtaining documents to establish name changes can be very difficult if the person has moved to different states. Each state and county has different processes to obtain them. Add in a clerks bias, add in age of person ... There are many hurdles roadblocks and more depending on the state and person. Add in things like the SAVE act later and it compounds the difficulty further. I'm not saying it's impossible to get one. It's not a one and done stop and shop for many and especially difficult for women. A few states have Enhanced ID. It's like a mini passport and state DL id and REAL ID but still non transferable. I have one. But as I previously mentioned it's actually easier to obtain a passport just more expensive. I have one of those too.
