🐙 Why Only Six Legs?
The creature in the film is famously known as the “Sixtopus” because it only had six tentacles instead of eight. Here's why:
- Ray Harryhausen, the legendary stop-motion animator behind the film, was given a limited budget.
- Animating each tentacle was labor-intensive and expensive, so the studio only funded six tentacles.
- Harryhausen cleverly framed shots to hide the missing limbs, making it appear as if the other two were just out of view or underwater.
He later joked that the monster was a “sixtopus” due to budgetary constraints, not biology.
