they just said “Hispaniola” or described it very vaguely as a “private Caribbean paradise.” There was no road to the enclave.
It was bought cheap but RCL has had to close it more than once because Haiti is such a dump.
While other cruise lines also operate private beaches like Disney's Castaway Cay or CCL's Princess Cay in the tranquil Bahamas; as of now, Royal Caribbean has once again suspended all visits to Labadee, due to escalating security concerns in the country.
🏝️ What’s Happening with Labadee?
- Labadee is mostly a private beach resort operated exclusively by Royal Caribbean on Haiti’s northern coast.
- Although it is physically isolated from the unrest in Port-au-Prince and protected by private security, the cruise line has paused visits “out of an abundance of caution.”
- The U.S. State Department currently maintains a Level 4: Do Not Travel advisory for Haiti due to widespread gang violence, kidnappings, and civil unrest.
🚢 Cruise Impact
- Ships like Voyager of the Seas, Oasis of the Seas, and Adventure of the Seas have rerouted to alternative ports such as Nassau, Bahamas and Puerto Plata, Dominican Republic.
- Royal Caribbean has not announced a firm date for resuming visits, though some itineraries for late 2025 still list Labadee as a potential stop.
🧭 Bottom Line
Labadee remains closed to cruise traffic for now, despite being a walled-off and previously safe destination. Royal Caribbean say they are monitoring the situation, but the closure is a result of passenger and crew safety (and guarding against legal liability) concerns which remain the top priority.
Looks like VooDoo spells and chicken bones haven't worked to put things back in order.
