For 90 years, Thorium treated mantles were the standard. In fact, at one time, The Coleman Company was registered and licensed by the NRC in order to manufacture Thorium treated mantles.
Sometime in the mid 90's, the EPA outlawed U.S. production...supposedly for our protection.

Thorium mantles are about twice as bright as what is available from Coleman, today.
