Mills faced multiple personal and Governor's Administration lawsuits from the Trump Administration primarily over expanding federal derived medical welfare to illegal aliens. She also faces lawsuits over her attacks on Title IX women's sports by fronting for biological males' demands to participate in women's sports and use women's locker rooms.
Mills cited insufficient financial backing as the key reason for her withdrawal. In a statement, she emphasized that while she has the drive, what political campaigns need most today is financial support.
Mills had been consistently trailing Platner in both public opinion polls and fundraising efforts. For instance, in early 2026, Platner had raised approximately $4.6 million compared to Mills' $2.7 million.
Her exit clears the way for Platner, allowing him to likely become the Democratic nominee against incumbent RINO Republican Senator Susan Collins in the general election.
This development comes just before the Maine Democratic Convention and well ahead of the state's primary on June 9. Mills had entered the race as an establishment favorite endorsed by prominent figures within the Democratic Party but faced challenges from a younger, and even more extreme leftist candidate in Platner.
Mills plans to continue serving as governor until her term concludes in January 2027. The Democratic establishment's support, which initially favored her, now shifts towards Platner as he emerges as the party's standard-bearer in the upcoming election against Collins.
