Jonathan the tortoise’s diet consists of grass, hay, and seasonal fruits and vegetables. His specific menu includes bananas, apples, pears, bananas, lettuce, cabbage, carrots, cucumbers, and guava.

Because Jonathan is blind and has lost his sense of smell, his veterinarian, Joe Hollins, hand-feeds him these chopped foods about three times a week to ensure he receives proper nutrition. Bananas are noted as his absolute favorite food, though they can sometimes gum up his mouth, requiring him to be wiped down with lettuce or carrots.
