There have been only two years, 1907 and 1914, when the Atlantic yielded no officially recorded tropical storms that reached hurricane strength. However, since both of these years were prior to satellites, meteorological buoys, and networked observation stations, weathermen have always added the caveat there may have been some unobserved hurricanes during those years.

Since WWII, the year with the season's latest first tropical storm to reach hurricane strength was 2002 when Gustav reached hurricane strength on September 11.

We are now on track to beat that record in 2026. Thus far in the 2026 Atlantic Hurricane Season, no tropical storms have reached hurricane strength. AND NOAA tells us "Tropical Cyclone activity is not expected during the next 7 days" - meaning at least not until September 12th or later.
