I visited Hawaii in the early 90's. A hotel worker gushed about the new Japanese owners...

...he spoke about how the American company which owned the hotel for many years let it get run down and, in some cases, even took safety shortcuts in order to make more money right now. He then spoke about how the new Japanese owners demanded that their asset - the hotel - be properly maintained and updated to protect its future value. The maintenance employee was very happy with the new owners and proud of the hotel's new look and feel. The difference in philosophy made a huge difference in how the hotel was run and maintained.
