Who goes back country skiing during a blizzard?

Even the major ski resorts have to mitigate avalanche hazards before allowing skiing.

It's not nice to fool with Mother Nature...

About your last sentence...not smart, either. They knew the danger and took the risk anyway. I suppose if there's any consolation it's that they 'checked out' doing what they passionately loved to do. Maybe that will help the families and friends left behind. I wonder...

When I was skiing, on big snowfalls, ski patrol launched explosive into snow build up areas to cause the avalanche before they would open the slopes. Sometimes, they would be an hour late to open up.

Very bad group personal decision to ski those areas.

Yep! I remember the sound of 75mm and 105mm cannons...

...blasting avalanches on Mammoth and June Mts.

Sometimes the ski patrol would plant dynamite on stubborn ledges.

To watch one coming down gives one a fresh look at Mother Nature and her power.
