Royal Caribbean's Perfect Day Mahahual project near Costa Maya, which had a planned investment of around $800 million, has just yesterday been rejected by Mexico's environmental authority, the Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources (SEMARNAT).
This decision effectively means that Royal Caribbean has faced a significant setback after spending approximately $411 million on acquiring the necessary land and facilities and even making infrastructure improvements.
Perfect Day Mahahual was intended to be a large private destination featuring attractions like pools, bars, and over 30 waterslides. It was projected to be larger than their existing private destinations.
Mexico claims the rejection stemmed from ecological backlash and concerns from local residents and environmental groups about the impact on the surrounding environment, including the nearby Mesoamerican Reef but it sounds more like somebody didn't get paid off. It could be back on again after they figure out whose pockets they need to line.
