It's a mystery. This morning 648 is back down to -36dBm and 693 is up to -28dBm. I'd expect any SDR changes to affect these two close frequencies in a similar manner, but it's all assumptions on my part. I guess only Alan Beach will know of any 648 adjustments. I apologise for jumping to conclusions - it's the anorak in me.
Those little Tecsuns are really good! I have a PL-330.
Good stuff David thanks. I only have a small Tecsun tx (PL398) to go by. It measures signal strength in dBu. Before the power increase to 4kw the signal averaged 42 dBu (daytime). At 4kw it’s now around 47/48.
Just took another look and it’s bang on 47. I realise this receiver is far from technically accurate, but it should indicate generally whether signal strength has gone up or down. Could something have changed at the Pullman Market rx site I wonder.
I live too far away to make any useful listening comparison - it's all skywave here. But, just checked again, and 648 and 693 are both still pushing -31dBm on Pulham Market and, looking at the spectrum plot, the carriers are a similar height, whereas 693 was always taller until recently. So something has changed recently.
No noticeable change in signal strength here (near Newmarket) this evening.
-36/37dBm
So what was the reading previously at that location?
Just been using the Pulham Market SDR. It has been showing a very consistant signal on 648 since Caroline went to 4kW. I can report a significant increase this evening, 19th April @ 6.50PM, equaling 5 Live on 693 for the first time at -32dBm.
See this Ofcom link for Caroline's application for more power.https://www.ofcom.org.uk/__data/assets/pdf_file/0026/256913/Radio-Caroline-coverage-extension-request.pdf
