I've noticed, when Tony talks about the high winds at sea, he always calls it "10 force" gale, instead of "Force 10" as it would normally be described as.
At the time of the startup of Radio 1 Blackburn was seen as being a bit of a traitor to free radio besides, his shows were so cheesy, truly dreadful with crappy jokes and bloody Arnold.
Retrospectively, I respect him as a tight DJ, but he does dine out continually on stories of his offshore days. As for Steve Wright - no way do I rate him at all and both are very pro establishment.
No, Tony Allen Andy Archer and Johnny Jason on Caroline in the 70s and RNI 70 -74 leave these behind. Didn't Twiggy Day beat Blackburn in a Disc and Music Echo poll back in 1970?
I agree with both, Tony for everything he's done, including his breaking and promotion of soul music. Plus the excellent Steve Wright, still miss the afternoon show. One of the great anoraks to still be on air and proud of it
I agree on both - Tony should have had an award for Climbing the mast to repair the aerial in the 1960s. (When no one else on board, would)
Well overdue that Tony got an honour. He should have had one at least ten years ago as he's been on the radio in some way for as long as anyone can remember. He just loves it. He's never nasty and is happy to talk to anybody who approaches him.
Not as enthusiastic myself about Steve Wright as he's always made sure his radio shows are about him and the music is incidental.
