Mutual friends is the normal way. My Facebook profile shares several mutual friends with him, but we aren't friends.
One thing I noticed he seems to have very particular 'likes'.

Facebook keeps suggesting Neil to me as a potential friend, showing his real name as Neil A*******g. I wonder how that connection was made?
