When Downtown arrived on air in Spring 1976 I used to listen as a respite from Radio Clyde when the Mi Amigo was inaudible. Big T on the Dinner Spinner” was especially entertaining with his pirate jingles, Man of Action, Big Lil and more. Reception on 1025 kHz at the time was very good at home in the west of Scotland, indeed the FM was often listenable.
RIP
Trevor Campbell, who had a celebrated radio career in Northern Ireland, especially on Downtown Radio, has passed away at the age of 78.
A friend of Don Allen, and with similar interest in old-style country music, he was on the Mebo II briefy in December 1972, but didn’t broadcast, and again in April 1973, when he did.
From the Friday 13 April tender until the Tuesday 17 April tender, Trevor Campbell broadcast on the main International service in the early hours of Sunday 15 April and on the Sunday day-time short-wave only World Service, with pictures taken of him in the large studio that was used for the Word Service.
On board at the time were Graham Gill, Brian McKenzie and myself, with Don on leave and Trevor taking over his pin-up decorated cabin for his four night stay.
