By the summer of 1964, seven offshore radio stations were already broadcasting in Northern and Western Europe. Rumours about further radio ships were constantly circulating. The Hamburg nightclub owner and founder of the legendary Star Club, where the Beatles had also performed in 1962, caused a particular stir. Manfred Weissleder wanted to use a Norwegian freighter with a 150kW medium-wave transmitter to entertain listeners in northern Germany and Denmark with lively music.
