Bleak times indeed. Caroline thought harder than ever during the period from the original mast collapsing and did remarkably well considering everything being thrown against her. It's such a shame it all came to this. There is good insight to the events leading up to this from Peter Moore, Nigel Harris, etc. But in summary, everyone tried their best given the circumstances. The challenging conditions were captured by Roy Balls - the first "caretaker" crew when the ship was re-boarded by Caroline on 14/12/1990 - five days after the original crew were forced to abandon ship on 10/12/1990.
