"Reaching a new anchorage in Ramsey Bay in the Isle of Man in the afternoon of 6th July, Radio Caroline North as it was named was soon broadcasting. Its powerful 20Kw transmitter reached much further than just the Isle of Man reaching listeners in the north and midlands of England, Wales, south west Scotland and much of Ireland. Thus complementing the coverage of Radio Caroline South."
There were 2 10kw transmitters. They only used one. Caroline South engineer George Saunders was sent up to the MV Caroline in September 1964, found that the second transmitter had been used to replace parts in the other one, technical issues meant overheating on the cables between the transmitter and studio , have his report somewhere. He reported back to Caroline's chief engineers John Gilman and A.N. Thomas who recommended that Caroline North engineer Ove Sundstrom be dismissed
Caroline then chief engineer Carl Thompson went to the MV Caroline in October 1966 to change its frequency to 1169. "We increased the power by combining. We actually got the combiner to work on the North Ship. It was never used successfully on the South ship " from his article in Happy Birthday Radio Caroline, 20 Years old, Easter 1984, lots of techical details of this mentioned.
In October 1965 they said they were going to do tests by sailing from Fleetwood to Llandundo to improve reception, groundwave propagation not as good in the North West as in East Anglia plus many built up areas, reception reports forms made available to listeners. Due to bad weather this never took place. Irish coverage was good due to sea path.
As to Manx Radio being successful it made a loss of £20,032 last financial year, had a subvention of £1,184,024, 50% of its income. RAJAR March 2026 listening figures show 38% reach and 19.8% listening share.
They've opened bookings to visit the Ross Revenge for the September RCN broadcast. Think it will be drydocked before the next one.
