This is hardly free radio, but perhaps interesting for us immersed in radio in 1967.

I have just learned that Jeff Bottom died at 80 in January. This is part of an obit:-

He joined the BBC around 1961, becoming a Technical Operator in London Control Room (LCR).

He opened the launch of Radio 1 (with Flowers in the Rain), when it launched in 1967, being chosen because he was seen as a better fit than his more experienced (and older) colleagues.

Later Jeff became the acting Technical Operations Manager for Network Radio.

Who he retired from the BBC in 1995 he worked in the independent radio sector.
