It was March, 1961, I was 14 and the only fan up on the 14th floor of the Hawaiian Village Hotel when his entourage approached the elevator. Hands reached out and several said, "No!". But my politeness paid off, Elvis reached through, took my autograph book and signed it. They passed it back to me just as the elevator doors were closing.
Col. Parker had told me I could not get his autograph. So at the concert I found Parker and showed him the autograph. "See, I got it."
Elvis was my ninth cousin twice removed. I did not know that at the time.
I liked him in the early days, I first saw him live at the Honolulu Stadium in 1957, that concert is on YouTube (the video isn't great). I saw him again at Bloch Arena in 1961.
I lost interest when he started dressing like Liberace in those jump suits. I really liked his early moves, but not the Karate chops he did later.
