If the tv went on the blink my father would hot-swap valves till the picture came back. He'd do the same with the wireless. I was really pleased when transistors arrived and valves gave way to the transistor. It meant that there was less chance he'd electrocute himself. That, for me, was late 50's early 60's U.K.

Only the Brits call vacuum tubes 'valves'. I thought I detected a bit of a British accent in that post.
