Bulk depleted uranium is only slightly radioactive, but is still a toxic heavy metal. It is hard to absorb much by handling intact chunks, but projectiles burn violently on impact, producing highly toxic uranium oxide dust. This persists in the soil, poisoning the land permanently until gradually leached away by rainfall. We have left hundreds or even thousands of tonnes of this nasty stuff all over test ranges in the USA plus Iraq and similar war theaters. We should use non-toxic tungsten carbide instead.
