Today, 1965, Mississippi Highway Patrolman Hughie Kohler goes ballistic as he violently rips the American flag out of the hands of young, 5-year-old Anthony Quin. Anthony’s mother, Mrs. Aylene Quinn of Mccomb, Mississippi took young Anthony and the rest of her children to see Gov. Paul Johnson to the capitol to protest the seating of 5 congressmen from districts where blacks could not vote. Picture below shows Anthony in tears, comforted by June Feiner after officer Kohler wrenched the flag from his hands. The American flag during the Civil Rights protest was often used as a symbol of racial integration. Young Anthony went on to get a PHD in Teaching Special Needs Students with Emotional Challenges. He passed in 2015 from pancreatic cancer at the age of 55. As for officer Kohler, He passed a number of years ago, and his obituary in the Jackson Daily News referred to this photograph and mentioned how he (Kohler) regretted that moment ‘for the rest of his life’.”
