Interesting question, well, Les, as you may know already "Islam" for many African Muslims, as well as for many in the African diaspora, Islamic religiosity was/is central to the articulation of African liberation, Black Moroccans see it that way. However I must be the only Gnawa man in north africa who says its all BS,...coz as a general principle, Islam encouraged the manumission of Muslim slaves as a way of expiating sins, and many early converts to Islam, such as Bilal, were former slaves. However, slavery persisted as an "institution" in the Muslim world through to the modern era.
Kinda like how the southern Blacks in the U.S were legally set free in 1865 however continue to do the slave work or were still considered slaves "during" and "after" 1865.
Now the Black Iraqis in the 800's AD did worse than the Black Panthers, they literally ruled Iraq for 15 years after the successful Zanj revolution in Basra, Iraq. And this happened in a period where Iraq was predominantly Muslim country . Yet despite all of this, Blacks in Iraq are still called "Abeed"(slaves) to this day in 2023, while on the other hand the AAs are still called the N-word, still getting lynched and killed for being Black to this very day in north america.
