Frederick Douglass and Black Classical Civilizations

Over the last few months I’ve been reading up on the life of Frederick Douglass, a truly fascinating character. To be sure, the man was a great orator, as witnessed in the following excerpt from his address to a standing room only crowd of African Americans in Baltimore on September 29, 1865. The occasion was the dedication of the Douglass Institute, located in the heart of Baltimore on Lexington Avenue: They [OF THE WHITE WORLD} CONTEND THAT {OUR} RACE, AS SUCH, IS DESTITUTE OF THE SUBJECTIVE ORIGINAL ELEMENTAL CONDITION OF A HIGH SELF-ORIGiNATING AND self-sustaining civilization. Forgotten has been the culture and accomplishments of Ethiopia, Egypt,Carthage, and the lands of Africa to the South; ignored too were Haiti and the emancipated islands of the West Indies. Where under the whole heaven was there ever a race so blasted and withers by three centuries of the unfavorable influence of Christendom? Our history has been but a track of blood.
