Although not conclusive, there is some evidence that Frederick Douglass' original slave name Bailey is derived from the common Muslim name Belali.

Belali was the name of the Black slave who was a muezzin, a caller to prayer, much admired by the prophet Muhammed.

This leads me to believe that his slave ancestors were educated people, too.

This autobiography of Omar Ibn Saiid ex poses the lie about African slaves being uneducated and uncultured. Except, "hahaha", the only thing I've noticed about Omar Ibn Saiid as a Muslim African slave was the fact that he saw himself being captured and enslaved by Christians in a Christian world, hahahahahaha, apparently Omar Ibn Saiid had NO idea that he was BLACK!! LOL
