I believe one of the main reasons Latinos felt like or think they can easily steal a march on AAs is because they can see the racial "disunity" between White and Black Americans. Back during segregation when Latinos were just 3% of the U.S population in the 1920s they were fighting to be "reclassified" as whites, and they never dare to say they build America. Also when their Latino Whiteness was rejected by White Anglos afterwards, then they have immediately started playing the "Brown" card.
