I also suspect that many in the media are relieved that he's quite a progressive American Pope in the age of Trump, so maybe let's ease up for a while on his racial identification so as not to rile up the MAGA crowd too much.

About 15 mins ago, Symone Sanders of MSNBC brought up his creole & Black heritage and someone on the panel went "oh oh", followed by laughter.
I wonder if it's a point worth noting that his racial background is mostly Creole & Black, not the usual white/black mixture; making the Pope's identity closer to that of the Haitian creole/"mulatto" folks rather than the American biracial type. Don't be fooled by his skin tone, Pope Leo has much more African roots than European.
