And let's not forget the many politicians who cheered & celebrated when Dr King was assassinated, especially after he came out against the Vietnam war.
Most of them in the South (Maddox, Thurmond etc], with a few going on to be elected members of congress etc.

Also, let's be honest here, after Pope Francis died, there was a bit of celebrating among the reactionary 'traditionalist Catholics' due to his progressive stances etc.

This is the first I can remember of folks being criminalized & persecuted for cheering the death of a high-profile person.
