That "small cast of characters" are mostly white folks who describe themselves as Christian Nationalists, and their religious belief is very reactionary, exclusive, and for the most part narrow-minded.
They include folks like Pastor Paula White, Rev Franklin Graham(son of billy graham), Pastor John Hagee, and our current Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth.
They are MAGA and currently compare Donald Trump to Jesus Christ etc etc etc.
The thing is though, they are now in power and have complete access to the White HOuse. Scary!
