Rosh Hashana begins tonight. Because tonight is also Shabbas, Judaism's day of rest, we won't hear the Shofar until Saturday night.
As depicted in this evocative postcard from the Leonard A. Lauder Postcard Archive, during Rosh Hashanah the ram’s horn, or Shofar, is blown and a blessing is recited in synagogue.
Below this prayer scene, the Hebrew inscription reads: “Blessed are thou, Lord our God, King of the Universe, who sanctifies us with His commandments and orders us to hear the sound of the Shofar.”
