Les, the camera was a godsend for African Americans in the latter half of the 19th century. It was an extremely important tool in countering the plethora of anti-Black propaganda of the post-Civil War era.
One of the first to realize the impact this new democratic art (photography) had in the good fight for social justice and Black emancipation was Frederick Douglass.
Douglass, the most photographed American of the 19th century, delivered a series of influential lectures, most notably 'Pictures and Progress,' exploring the connection between positive images and human rights."
