Below top is a picture of Kelly Alexander of the Wadesboro, North Carolina NAACP comforting 9-year-old James Hanover Thompson and his 8-year-old friend David “Fuzzy” Simpson following their unsuccessful habeas corpus hearing in late October of 1958.
Both boys were arrested, beaten, and terrorized by police dressed in KKK outfits. Their crime: being kissed goodbye on the cheek by 7-year-old Sissy Thornton, one of the white kids with whom the boys were playing. Below bottom, James Hanover Thompson (left) and his brother Dwight Thompson in 2011. Also below, link with full story of the boy's conviction and later pardon (1959) by the governor.
