Belated happy birthday to the late Dick Gregory (August 19th). For you youngsters, Gregory was a popular Black comedian in the 50's and 60's. Richard Pryor often gave thanks to him for opening the door for other aspiring Black comics.
He had strong ties to my home city of Milwaukee. He often said it was his second home.
In the long struggle for fair housing here, he was on the frontlines of every march, some of which were dangerously violent.
Over the years, I ran into Gregory three times at my local grocery store; he was always friendly and accessible. Below, an article on Gregory and his time spent here in my hometown.
Later in life he got fascinated & taken in by some 'conspiracies', but given what we are living under with an administration peopled by conspiracy nutjobs, Dick Gregory was very very sane! Lol
